Whirlpool Stock Plummets on Surprise Q3 Loss, Drastic Full-Year Guidance Cut

Whirlpool Corporation (WHR) shares plunged in pre-market trading after the appliance maker reported a surprise third-quarter loss and drastically cut its full-year earnings forecast for the third time this year. The results, released after Monday's close, pointed to a slower-than-expected market recovery and significant operational headwinds.
Disappointing Q3 Results and Outlook
The company's financial performance fell far short of analyst expectations, triggering a sharp selloff. Key figures from the report include:
- Q3 Adjusted EPS: A loss of $0.21, starkly missing the consensus estimate of a $1.04 profit.
- Q3 Revenue: $3.68 billion, falling well short of the $3.97 billion forecast and marking an 8.8% year-over-year decline in net sales.
Compounding the weak quarterly results, Whirlpool slashed its full-year 2026 guidance. The company now projects an ongoing EPS loss of approximately $1.30, a dramatic reversal from the positive $1.21 profit that analysts had modeled. The full-year revenue outlook was also trimmed to roughly $14.5 billion.
CEO Marc Bitzer acknowledged that "the pace of recovery is slower than expected," but pointed to pricing actions and cost initiatives as a path toward margin improvement in 2027, according to the company's release.
Multiple Headwinds Pressure Margins
AdA confluence of factors contributed to the poor performance. A particularly damaging event was the bankruptcy reorganization of Grupo Casas Bahia, Whirlpool’s largest retail customer in Brazil, which the company said weighed heavily on results and contributed to negative free cash flow in the period.
Weakness was also pronounced in the company's key North American market. The North American appliance segment saw operating profit plummet by 44.7% as revenue fell 8.3%. Management attributed the ongoing demand issues to a sluggish housing market and weak consumer sentiment.
Analyst Downgrades and Market Reaction
In response to the report, Whirlpool stock fell 7.4% in pre-open trading to a new 52-week low of $25.73, extending its year-to-date losses to more than 60%.
Analysts moved quickly to reassess the company's prospects. Stifel Nicolaus slashed its price target on the stock to $30 from $37, citing weakness in North American appliance shipment data and market share losses. Wells Fargo maintained its cautious Equal Weight stance, noting margin shortfalls in both North America and Latin America left few bright spots in the report.
