Wheat Futures Retreat on Profit-Taking Despite Black Sea Tensions

Summary

Wheat futures declined on Monday as traders capitalized on recent gains, with the pullback overshadowing persistent supply risks from the Black Sea region and adverse weather in Canada.

Background

Chicago wheat futures fell on Monday as traders took profits following a rally last week, even as ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea region continue to threaten global grain supplies.

Market Details

On the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), the most-active September soft red winter wheat contract settled down 5 cents at $6.69-3/4 per bushel. Other key benchmarks also retreated:

  • Kansas City September hard red winter wheat fell 5-3/4 cents to $7.48-1/2 per bushel.
  • Minneapolis September spring wheat dipped 1-1/4 cents to $6.77 per bushel.

The downward pressure was primarily attributed to profit-taking after prices rose in the previous week on concerns over disruptions to Black Sea grain exports.

Black Sea and Weather Concerns Persist

Despite Monday's price drop, underlying market support remains due to escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Weeks of mutual attacks have curtailed grain shipments from the crucial export region, including from Russia's major grain hub at the port of Novorossiysk.

Ukrainian authorities reported on Monday that Russia had launched an overnight attack on port infrastructure in the Izmail district of the Odesa region, further highlighting the risks to supply chains.

Adding to global supply worries, crop conditions in Canada are deteriorating. According to reports, the country's spring wheat crop is suffering from widespread disease after an unusually rainy year, the first in a decade, presenting a costly challenge for farmers.
