Background

U.S. stocks finished lower across the board on Monday, capping a session marked by broad-based selling pressure. All three major indices ended the day in negative territory as losses in key sectors weighed on investor sentiment.

Major Indices Decline

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.67%, while the benchmark S&P 500 index declined 0.77%. The tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite saw the steepest losses, falling 0.92% by the close, according to data from Investing.com.

The downturn was driven by notable weakness in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods, and Financials sectors. Market breadth was decidedly negative, with falling stocks outnumbering advancing ones by a more than 3-to-1 margin on the New York Stock Exchange.

Laggards and Leaders

Among the Dow's worst performers was Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which plunged 6.91%. On the broader S&P 500, Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) shed 7.17%, and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) dropped 5.67%.

There were a few bright spots in the market. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) bucked the downward trend on the Dow, rising 1.91%. Palo Alto Networks Inc (NASDAQ:PANW) was the top gainer on the S&P 500, climbing 4.63%.

Volatility Spikes, Commodities Diverge

Investor anxiety appeared to be on the rise, as the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often referred to as Wall Street's "fear gauge," jumped 8.07% to 16.07. A higher VIX reading typically signals increased market uncertainty.

In commodity markets, Gold Futures for December delivery saw a sharp decline, falling 3.94%. In contrast, energy prices moved higher, with November Crude oil futures rising 0.96% to $93.30 a barrel. The US Dollar Index Futures gained 0.23%, indicating a stronger greenback against a basket of currencies.
