Background

UBS has cut its 12-month price forecast for palladium to approximately $1,100 per ounce, reflecting growing pessimism among investors and weakening demand fundamentals. The new target represents a reduction of $100 to $200 from the Swiss bank's previous forecasts for December, March, and June.

Bearish Indicators Mount

In a research note, UBS highlighted several factors driving its more cautious outlook. The bank pointed to a clear weakening in investor willingness to hold palladium positions and noted an increasingly bearish sentiment emerging in the options market.

These financial market indicators suggest that participants are becoming more pessimistic about the precious metal's price prospects over the medium term.

Demand Headwinds from China

On the physical demand side, a key concern is a significant drop in palladium imports by China. According to data cited by UBS, imports plunged from nearly 8.6 metric tons in April to just 3.4 metric tons in September.

This sharp decline in demand from a major industrial consumer adds substantial weight to the bearish case for the metal, which is primarily used in catalytic converters for gasoline-powered vehicles.

Potential Support from Platinum Spread

However, UBS noted one factor that could partially offset the negative outlook. The widening price discount of palladium relative to platinum is improving the economic viability of its re-substitution into automotive catalysts.

This growing price gap could provide some underlying support for palladium demand from the auto sector, as it makes the metal a more cost-effective choice compared to platinum for certain applications.
