UBS Slashes Palladium Forecast to $1,100 on Waning Investor Interest, China Demand

Background

UBS has lowered its 12-month price forecast for palladium to approximately $1,100 per ounce, a reduction of $100 to $200 from its previous estimates for December, March, and June. The Swiss bank attributed the downgrade to increasingly bearish investor sentiment and weakening physical demand, particularly from China.

Bearish Headwinds Mount

According to UBS, financial market sentiment toward palladium has grown more cautious. The bank pointed to a reduced willingness among investors to hold positions in the precious metal, a trend supported by growing bearishness in the options market.

This negative outlook is compounded by a significant slowdown in Chinese demand. UBS highlighted a sharp decline in the country's palladium imports, which plummeted from nearly 8.6 metric tons in April to just 3.4 metric tons in September. This drop signals weaker industrial consumption in a key global market.

Substitution Economics May Offer Support

Despite the bearish factors, one development could provide a floor for prices. UBS noted that palladium's widening price discount relative to platinum is improving the economic case for its use in the automotive sector.

Both metals are key components in catalytic converters for gasoline-powered vehicles. The significant price gap makes it more attractive for automakers to substitute palladium back in for the more expensive platinum, a dynamic that could help support industrial demand and partially offset the broader negative sentiment.
