SoftBank Stock Surges on Report of Massive OpenAI Fundraising Round

Summary
Shares of the Japanese investment giant climbed over 7% following reports that its key holding, OpenAI, is seeking a new funding round that would value the AI firm at approximately $1.4 trillion.
SoftBank Group Corp. (TYO:9984) shares surged on Wednesday, driven by reports that its key artificial intelligence investment, OpenAI, is targeting a new fundraising round at a significantly higher valuation.
OpenAI Valuation Boosts SoftBank
The stock climbed 7.0% to close at ¥6,457, according to a report from Investing.com. The primary catalyst was news that OpenAI is seeking to raise $30 billion in a funding round that would value the AI pioneer at approximately $1.4 trillion.
Such a valuation would substantially increase the net asset value of SoftBank's holdings. The Japanese conglomerate is a major investor in OpenAI and is on track to hold a stake of roughly 13% by October 1, 2026. SoftBank recently completed an $11.1 billion high-yield bond issuance to finance its final $10 billion investment tranche in the AI company.
AdBroader Market Tailwinds
The rally was also supported by broader market trends, including quarter-end bargain buying in technology shares. The sector had recently experienced heightened volatility amid investor uncertainty over the sustainability of the AI-driven market rally.
SoftBank's gains outpaced the wider Japanese market, though the benchmark Nikkei 225 index also had a strong session, adding over 2%. Despite recent turbulence, SoftBank's stock was up 8.1% for the quarter, the report noted.
