SIG Shares Plunge 22% on Profit Warning and Weak First-Half Sales

Summary
Shares in British building materials supplier SIG plummeted after the company lowered its full-year profit forecast, citing a 1.5% drop in first-half sales due to challenging construction markets and poor weather.
Shares in SIG plc (LSE:SHI) plummeted as much as 22% on Thursday after the British building materials supplier issued a profit warning, citing a decline in first-half sales amid persistently challenging market conditions.
Profit Outlook Slashed
SIG announced it now expects annual underlying operating profit to be approximately £25 million ($33.8 million). This revision follows a 1.5% decline in like-for-like sales for the first half of the year, which the company attributed to difficult construction markets and adverse weather at the start of the year.
The company's outlook for the remainder of the year remains cautious. In its statement, SIG said it does not expect a "material recovery in market conditions" in the second half, signaling to investors that the industry-wide headwinds are likely to persist.
Strategic Response
AdIn response to the weak performance, SIG also unveiled a new improvement plan intended to bolster its financial position. The company stated the plan is designed to achieve two primary goals by the first half of 2028:
- Generate £100 million in cash.
- Increase its profit run rate by £50 million.
This strategic initiative represents management's effort to navigate the current downturn and restructure for improved profitability, though the immediate market reaction focused on the near-term earnings downgrade.
