SCOR Q2 Net Income Declines 24% on Weaker Revenue and One-Off Charge

Summary
The French reinsurer reported second-quarter net income of €171 million, down from the prior year, as a one-off arbitration outcome in its life and health unit weighed on results despite strong underwriting performance in property and casualty.
French reinsurer SCOR SE on Thursday reported a 24% year-over-year decline in second-quarter net income to €171 million, impacted by lower insurance revenue and a one-time charge in its life and health division.
Quarterly Performance Breakdown
SCOR's financial results for the quarter were mixed, with a notable divergence between its main business segments. The company's overall performance included:
- Net Income: €171 million, a 24% decrease from the same period last year.
- Insurance Revenue: A decline of 5.1% year-over-year.
- First-Half Net Income: The company posted a net income of €397 million for the first six months of 2026.
The company stated that its Life and Health (L&H) insurance service result was negatively affected by a "one-off negative arbitration outcome" during the period, contributing to the drop in overall profitability.
P&C Underwriting Shines
AdIn contrast to the L&H segment, SCOR's Property and Casualty (P&C) division delivered a strong underwriting result. The P&C combined ratio, a key measure of profitability for insurers, improved significantly to 79.5%. A ratio below 100% indicates an underwriting profit.
The reinsurer attributed this strong performance to a period of low natural catastrophe activity and a solid performance on attritional losses, which are the more predictable, smaller claims that are a regular part of business.
Outlook and Investment Income
Looking ahead, SCOR said it anticipates a "continued competitive environment" in the P&C reinsurance market. However, the company confirmed that its capital generation remains on track to meet its full-year 2026 guidance.
SCOR also noted a bright spot in its investment portfolio. Investment income remained robust, supported by a high regular income yield and the benefit of elevated reinvestment rates. The company expects this positive trend to continue, providing a tailwind for future earnings.
