Sagimet Biosciences Rallies on Positive Acne Drug Data and $115M Stock Offering

Summary
Shares of Sagimet Biosciences gained after the company reported encouraging long-term Phase 3 results for its acne treatment and announced a concurrent stock offering to raise approximately $115 million.
Sagimet Biosciences (SGMT) stock rose on Monday after the company announced positive 52-week data for its acne drug candidate, denifanstat, and simultaneously priced a significant capital raise to fund its next clinical trial.
Encouraging Long-Term Clinical Results
Sagimet reported highly encouraging results from a Phase 3 open-label extension trial of denifanstat, a once-daily oral fatty acid synthase (FASN) inhibitor. The trial, conducted in China by its partner Ascletis BioScience Co. Ltd., evaluated the drug for moderate to severe acne vulgaris.
According to a company press release, the key findings over 52 weeks include:
- A treatment-success rate of 57%.
- A 72% reduction in total acne lesions.
- A 77% decline in inflammatory lesions.
Sagimet also reported that denifanstat was well-tolerated throughout the year-long study, with no drug-related serious adverse events or permanent discontinuations due to the medication.
$115 Million Capital Raise
AdConcurrent with the clinical update, Sagimet announced an underwritten stock offering expected to generate approximately $115 million in gross proceeds. The offering consists of 8,750,010 shares of common stock priced at $10.00 per share and pre-funded warrants to purchase another 2,750,010 shares.
The company stated it plans to use the proceeds to fund a U.S. Phase 3 trial for denifanstat in acne, known as AURORA, as well as for pre-launch activities and to advance its TVB-3567 program.
Market Impact and Context
Shares of Sagimet initially surged to an intraday high of $10.92 before pulling back, closing with a more moderate gain. The stock's retreat from its peak was likely influenced by the dilutive nature of the large stock offering, which increases the total number of shares outstanding.
The rally was supported by a constructive market backdrop for growth-oriented stocks. A softer-than-expected reading on the Core PCE Price Index, a key inflation gauge watched by the Federal Reserve, bolstered investor sentiment and provided a tailwind for the biotech sector. For Sagimet, the combination of positive long-term data and a secured financing package to advance its lead asset into a pivotal U.S. trial appeared to outweigh concerns over share dilution.
