Robinhood to Introduce 24/7 Trading with Weekend Access for Select US Stocks

Summary
The online brokerage announced it will allow users to trade a selection of US stocks and ETFs around the clock on weekends, a first for the platform and part of a broader industry shift toward continuous market access.
Robinhood announced on Tuesday that it plans to allow users to trade certain U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The move marks a significant expansion of market access for retail investors and aligns with a broader industry trend toward all-hours trading.
Expansion to Weekend Trading
The new feature, which is pending regulatory review, will build upon Robinhood's existing 24-hour weekday trading service launched in 2023. The company reported that since that launch, as much as 25% of its total daily trading volume on busy days has occurred outside of traditional market hours. The weekend service will be offered for a curated list of securities in partnership with Bruce ATS, an overnight trading infrastructure firm.
"Our focus this year is making Robinhood the best place for active traders by giving them the tools that are typically reserved for hedge funds, quants and a lot of big active trading firms," Abhishek Fatehpuria, vice president of product management, told Reuters.
Market Implications and Industry Context
Robinhood's initiative is part of a fundamental shift in financial markets, with global exchanges like Nasdaq and the London Stock Exchange also exploring extended hours. The goal is to provide investors with greater flexibility to react to breaking news and to tap into a wider base of global capital. Proponents argue that traditional market hours can create unnecessary risk, as investors must wait until the opening bell to adjust positions in response to weekend events.
AdHowever, some market participants have raised concerns that trading during non-traditional hours could be subject to thin liquidity. Lower trading volumes can lead to wider bid-ask spreads and less optimal pricing for investors. The long-term impact on price discovery and market volatility remains a key area of observation for the industry.
New Products for Active Traders
Alongside the 24/7 trading announcement, Robinhood unveiled several other features aimed at sophisticated traders:
- Prediction Markets: In a partnership with derivatives exchange Cboe, users will be able to place wagers on specific corporate earnings metrics, such as whether a company will beat revenue estimates.
- Perpetual Futures: Eligible U.S. customers will gain access to trade perpetual futures, which are derivatives without a fixed expiration date.
- AI Trading Agents: The company is introducing a feature that allows users to build AI agents within the app to execute trades on their behalf.
- Social Platform: Robinhood's social platform, which functions similarly to Reddit's WallStreetBets community, is set for a full rollout to all eligible U.S. customers following a beta launch.
