Microsoft Unveils 'Autopilot' AI Agent and Code Generation Tools for Copilot

Microsoft on Friday revealed a suite of major enhancements for its Copilot artificial intelligence assistant, including new agentic capabilities and a code generation tool, as the company seeks to cement the product's role as a central productivity hub for enterprise users.

According to a report from Reuters, the software giant is also embedding its core Office applications—Word, Excel, and PowerPoint—directly within the Copilot interface, allowing for seamless collaborative work without switching between programs.

New AI Capabilities

The most significant updates include two new flagship features designed to expand Copilot's functionality beyond its chat-based origins:

• Autopilot: A new AI agent, described as a "digital coworker," that will have its own identity within a company's directory and user-controlled permissions. This feature, a revamp of the previously unveiled "Scout" agent, is designed to automate complex tasks and will enter a private preview at the end of the month.
• Code: A tool that enables users to build applications, dashboards, and other software using natural language prompts. Powered by the same technology as Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, "Code" will be available to early-access customers at the end of the month and to 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later this year.

Annie Pearl, corporate vice president of Copilot Product, noted the difficulties organizations face in deploying AI agents due to security, compliance, and governance issues. "We’ve worked... to make sure that we were building this in a way that would really be able to be used in the enterprise," Pearl said in an interview with Reuters.

To that end, Microsoft also introduced new cost-management capabilities. This feature provides companies with direct insight into the expenses associated with AI usage, a critical tool for enterprises concerned about unpredictable costs as they scale their use of generative AI technologies.
