Gotion to Invest $1.25 Billion in Volkswagen's Spanish Battery Plant

Summary
Chinese battery firm Gotion will acquire a 49% stake in Volkswagen's Valencia battery plant for €1.1 billion ($1.25 billion) as part of a wider partnership to build a European EV battery supply chain.
Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-tech will invest €1.1 billion ($1.25 billion) to acquire a 49% stake in Volkswagen's battery plant in Valencia, Spain. The deal, announced on Sept. 28, deepens the strategic alliance between the two companies and aims to establish a robust European supply chain for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
A Strategic Partnership with Cross-Investments
The agreement involves reciprocal investments to vertically integrate their battery production capabilities in Europe. While Gotion takes a minority stake in the Valencia facility, Volkswagen's battery unit, PowerCo, will remain the majority shareholder.
In a parallel move, PowerCo will invest €470 million to acquire a 49% stake in two of Gotion's facilities:
- A battery cell factory in Šurany, Slovakia.
- A new cathode material production site in Kenitra, Morocco.
Volkswagen stated that the Valencia plant is set to become a European production hub for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a key technology for more affordable electric vehicles.
Market Implications and Geopolitical Context
AdThis partnership solidifies Gotion's manufacturing footprint within Europe. The move comes as Chinese companies are increasing their presence on the continent, potentially ahead of anticipated measures by Brussels to protect European Union industries from a surge in lower-cost imports, including Chinese-made EVs.
For Volkswagen, the deal helps secure a localized supply chain for critical battery components, reducing reliance on Asian imports and mitigating potential tariff risks. Thomas Schmall, VW's technology chief, called the move "a major breakthrough for both companies and brings us one step closer to the forefront of electric mobility," according to a Reuters report.
Volkswagen Adjusts Gotion Holdings
Volkswagen is currently Gotion's largest single shareholder with a 24% stake. Alongside the new investment plan, the German automaker said it had agreed to sell a 5.3% stake in Gotion to an unnamed buyer.
According to LSEG data cited by Reuters, the sale is valued at approximately $373 million. This divestment aligns with Volkswagen's broader corporate strategy, which includes a significant overhaul and a reduction of its extensive investment portfolio.
