Global Stocks Muted as Investors Await Fed Decision, Big Tech Earnings

Summary

Global markets were mixed as investors paused ahead of a key Federal Reserve interest rate decision and earnings from Microsoft and Meta. A sharp selloff in Asian AI-related stocks highlighted growing concerns over lofty valuations.

Background

Global stock markets showed a mixed and cautious performance on Wednesday as investors awaited a crucial interest rate decision from the U.S. Federal Reserve and pivotal earnings reports from technology heavyweights.

A sharp selloff in Asian markets, driven by concerns over stretched valuations in the artificial intelligence sector, tempered modest gains seen in Europe and the U.S., leaving global indices like the MSCI All Country World Price index down 0.11%.

AI-Driven Volatility Shakes Asia

Sentiment surrounding AI-linked chipmakers soured significantly in Asia, where lofty expectations have created a volatile environment. The South Korean KOSPI index fell nearly 6%, extending a recent plunge.

A prime example was chipmaker SK Hynix, whose shares plummeted 9.61% despite the company reporting a sixfold jump in quarterly profit. The result fell short of the market's exceptionally high expectations, underscoring the pressure on tech firms to deliver flawless results.

"The selloff in chip stocks looks overdone, but volatility should be expected whenever the market finds reasons to question the durability of the AI cycle," said Jake Seltz, a portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments, in comments to Reuters. "Expectations were so high that good numbers have not always been enough."

Fed Decision and Inflation Risks Loom

Investors are also squarely focused on the Federal Reserve's policy announcement, scheduled for later in the day. While traders widely expect the central bank to hold interest rates steady, markets are pricing in the possibility of at least one more hike by the end of the year as policymakers remain concerned about inflation.

Adding to inflation worries, rising oil prices are back in the spotlight. Brent crude futures rose 3.29% to $86.86 a barrel amid fresh geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East. This price pressure was reflected in the bond market, where the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note climbed to 4.6103%.
