The demonstration is planned for Firefly's third lunar mission, which is targeted to launch no earlier than 2028. According to the announcement, Starcloud has previously completed a successful AI computing demonstration in low Earth orbit and is now extending those capabilities to the lunar environment.

Strategic Importance and Context

The collaboration is a step toward building the necessary infrastructure for a permanent presence on and around the Moon. "We're proud to collaborate with innovative customers like Starcloud and collectively take another step toward establishing the infrastructure that will power a permanent human and robotic presence at the Moon," said Ray Allensworth, Vice President of Spacecraft at Firefly Aerospace.

This mission will utilize the second Elytra vehicle Firefly deploys to lunar orbit, with the first scheduled for no earlier than 2027. The Elytra orbiter will initially support Firefly's Blue Ghost lander for NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative before beginning its long-duration mission. Each Elytra vehicle is designed for an operational life of up to five years in lunar orbit, serving as a platform for customer payloads and imaging operations.
