Fervo Energy Shares Jump on 'First Power' Milestone at Utah Geothermal Plant

Summary
The geothermal energy developer's stock surged after it announced its Cape Station facility became the world's first utility-scale enhanced geothermal project to connect to the power grid.
Shares of Fervo Energy (FRVO) surged 7.3% in pre-market trading on September 24 after the company announced a major operational milestone. The firm's Cape Station geothermal facility in Utah has achieved "First Power," making it the world's first utility-scale enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) project to synchronize with an electrical grid and export electricity.
A World-First Achievement
Fervo's Cape Station, located in Beaver County, Utah, represents a significant step forward for the geothermal industry. According to the company, this achievement validates the commercial viability of next-generation geothermal technology.
- The project's first phase is an approximately 100 MW installation.
- The first of three 33-megawatt sections is expected to begin commercial operations by October 1, 2026.
- The remaining two sections are slated for commercial operation by January 1, 2027.
In a statement, Fervo CEO and Co-Founder Tim Latimer called the milestone "a gamechanger for the geothermal industry," adding that it "establishes EGS as the defining new power generation technology of our time."
Building Commercial Momentum
AdThe announcement follows several positive developments that have bolstered investor confidence. On September 1, Fervo announced a 396 MW power purchase agreement with Google, the largest such deal ever for an EGS project. The agreement includes an option for Google to expand its contracted capacity to nearly 1 GW by 2030.
Additionally, on September 10, Northland analyst Jeff Grampp initiated coverage on the stock with an Outperform rating and a $27 price target. Fervo reports it has 900 MW fully contracted and a total development pipeline exceeding 4 GW.
Market Reaction
Fervo's stock gain stood in sharp contrast to the broader market, with S&P 500, Dow, and Nasdaq futures all trading lower amid rising Treasury yields and inflation concerns. The company-specific catalyst allowed its shares to outperform significantly in a risk-off environment.
The pre-market move to $17.55 suggests investors are beginning to re-evaluate the company as it transitions from a development-stage firm to an operating power producer. The stock remains well below its 52-week high of $42.65.
