Cryptocurrency derivatives exchange Deribit and trading software firm SignalPlus have launched their fifth and largest joint trading competition, titled "The Island," featuring a prize pool of up to $600,000 USDC. The 35-day event is designed to attract and reward active retail traders in the crypto options and futures markets, according to a company announcement.
Competition Details
The competition, which began on July 6, 2026, is open to eligible retail traders who execute trades on the Deribit platform using SignalPlus software. Standings are determined by notional trading volume, with options trades weighted at 1.0 and futures trades weighted at 0.5.
Key details from the announcement include:
- Total Prize Pool: Up to $600,000 USDC
- Registration Period: June 29, 2026 – August 10, 2026
- Competition Period: July 6, 2026 – August 10, 2026
The event is structured into eleven "arenas" that include weekly leaderboards for both solo and team participants, daily missions, and incentives for block trades and referrals.
New Features and Strategic Goals
AdThis year's competition introduces several new mechanics aimed at increasing engagement. These include a "Mystery Box" deposit bonus, a weekly profit-and-loss (P&L) leaderboard, and a "Flash Arena" that offers reward multipliers specifically for trading short-dated options.
"The Island brings together everything we want this competition to be: bigger scale, stronger participation loops, and a structure that rewards how active options traders actually engage," said Luuk Strijers, a Senior Director at Deribit by Coinbase, in the press release. He described the event as the firm's "most ambitious retail trading campaign yet."
Market Context
Such competitions are a common strategy for exchanges and platforms to boost trading volumes, user acquisition, and platform loyalty in the highly competitive crypto derivatives market. By targeting sophisticated retail traders with complex reward structures, the firms aim to solidify their user base.
Chris Yu, CEO and Co-Founder of SignalPlus, stated that the goal is to create "a more immersive experience for sophisticated retail traders." The extensive prize list, which includes a Rolex watch, NVIDIA stock, and a "Private Island jackpot," is designed to incentivize high-volume activity throughout the event's duration.
