DaVoice Sues Perplexity AI, Alleging Theft of Wake Word Trade Secrets

Summary
AI startup DaVoice has filed a federal lawsuit against Perplexity AI, accusing the company of misappropriating confidential technology for AI assistant 'wake words' following a collaboration.
Artificial intelligence startup DaVoice has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI in a California federal court, alleging the company stole trade secrets related to its AI assistant “wake word” technology. The complaint, filed Thursday, claims Perplexity misappropriated confidential information after the two firms collaborated on a project.
Details of the Lawsuit
According to the court filing, which contains heavy redactions, DaVoice accuses Perplexity AI of taking proprietary information shared during their partnership. DaVoice specializes in technology that allows devices to continuously listen for specific phrases that activate them.
The lawsuit alleges the theft involved multiple key components of its technology, including:
- Proprietary source code
- Inference logic and network architecture
- Unique training approaches and data
AdDaVoice has previously developed its technology for clients such as automaker Volkswagen and internet-of-things company Samsara, according to the source material. Representatives for DaVoice did not respond to requests for comment.
Perplexity Calls Claims 'Baseless'
In a response on Friday, a spokesperson for Perplexity AI described the lawsuit as a "baseless attempt to claim ownership of standard wake-word technology." The spokesperson asserted that the agreement between the two companies explicitly protected Perplexity's right to independently develop similar or competitive products.
This legal dispute highlights the intense competition over intellectual property in the rapidly evolving AI sector. The ownership of foundational technologies like wake word activation is critical for companies developing AI assistants and other voice-activated services, making such partnerships and their outcomes a focal point for the industry.
