Copper Rallies to Brink of All-Time High, But Technicals Signal Caution

Summary
Copper futures surged to within 1% of their record high, driven by strong buying momentum. However, key technical indicators like the Relative Strength Index (RSI) are approaching overbought levels, signaling potential exhaustion as the metal challenges a major resistance point.
Copper prices have surged to just under their all-time high, fueled by strong bullish momentum that has pushed the industrial metal into a critical test of historical resistance. While the uptrend remains firmly intact, technical indicators are beginning to flash signs of overextension, creating a tense standoff for market participants.
Momentum Nears Major Hurdle
Copper futures recently pushed to a fresh high of $6.64 on the four-hour chart, placing the commodity less than 1% below its former all-time peak of $6.71, according to market data. The rally is supported by several bullish technical signals.
The price remains decisively above its key 20, 50, and 200-period simple moving averages (SMAs), indicating a robust short- and long-term uptrend. Furthermore, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator shows increasing buying strength, confirming the powerful upward momentum that has characterized recent trading sessions.
Overbought Conditions Raise Caution
Despite the strong rally, warning signs of potential exhaustion are emerging. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), a measure of price momentum, has climbed to 68.12. A reading above 70 is typically considered "overbought," suggesting that an asset's price has risen too quickly and may be due for a consolidation or pullback.
AdOther cautionary signals include the price testing the upper limit of its Bollinger Band at $6.66 and historically low trading volume above the $6.65 level. Analysts are now closely watching the $6.71 resistance. A failure to break above this level could establish a bearish "double top" pattern, which often precedes a price reversal.
Key Price Levels in Focus
For market watchers, the price action around the $6.71 all-time high is the most critical trigger. A sustained break above this level could attract further momentum-based buying. Conversely, a firm rejection could shift sentiment and prompt a move back toward established support zones.
Technical analysis points to a significant area of support between $6.48 and $6.52, a zone where the 20-period SMA and Fibonacci retracement levels converge. Should a pullback occur, this area is likely to be a key battleground between buyers and sellers. Deeper support is noted near $6.43 and $6.31.
