Copper Price Hits Key Technical Resistance at 200-Day Average and Fibonacci Level

Copper futures (HG) are facing a significant technical hurdle as the price challenges a confluence of major resistance levels, creating a pivotal moment for the industrial metal's short-term trend. According to an analysis by Investing.com, the price is currently testing the 200-day simple moving average (SMA) and the 50% Fibonacci retracement level, a zone that could either cap the recent advance or signal a more sustained breakout.
A Confluence of Resistance
The primary challenge for copper bulls is the resistance area between $6.6312 and $6.6500. This zone is significant for two key reasons:
- 200-Day Simple Moving Average: The price is testing its 200-day SMA at $6.6312. This long-term trend indicator is widely watched by traders; a sustained move above it is often interpreted as a bullish shift in the long-term market structure.
- Fibonacci Retracement: The 50% Fibonacci retracement level at $6.6500 represents a major structural resistance point. This level is calculated from the recent swing high and the V-shaped bottom formed at $6.3715.
A decisive breakout above this area could open the door to further gains, with the next significant resistance identified at the 61.8% Fibonacci level of $6.7157.
Momentum Indicators Flash Warning Signs
AdWhile the price action shows strong buying pressure, several momentum indicators suggest a high risk of exhaustion and a potential pullback. The Money Flow Index (MFI) on the 5-hour chart has reached 97.67, a level described as "extremely overbought" in the analysis. This indicates that the recent upward move is at risk of a sharp mean-reversion.
Additionally, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 66.28, approaching the overbought territory typically marked at 70. In contrast, the MACD indicator remains bullish, with its main line above the signal line, suggesting that upward momentum is still accelerating for now. This divergence between indicators highlights the uncertainty at the current price level.
Potential Scenarios for Traders
The market is now positioned at a critical decision point, with clear levels defining the bull and bear cases. A failure to break through the $6.6500 resistance could create a "bull trap" and trigger a sell-off. Traders will be watching for a rejection at this level as a potential short-term bearish signal.
Conversely, a confirmed close on the 5-hour chart above the 200-day SMA could be seen as an aggressive entry point for bulls, targeting higher levels at $6.7157 and the structural swing high of $6.8000. Key support for the current uptrend is located around the Supertrend indicator at $6.4984; a break below this level would invalidate the bullish outlook.
