BJ's Wholesale Outlook Raised to Positive by Moody's on Debt Reduction

Summary
Moody's Ratings has revised its outlook on BJ's Wholesale Club to positive from stable, citing the retailer's disciplined debt reduction and strong operational performance, which could lead to an investment-grade credit rating.
Moody's Ratings has upgraded its outlook on BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings Inc. (NYSE:BJ) to positive from stable, signaling confidence in the company's financial management and putting it on a path toward an investment-grade credit rating. The rating agency affirmed BJ's Ba1 Corporate Family Rating, which is one notch below investment grade.
Key Rating Actions
In its assessment, Moody's highlighted BJ's consistent operational execution and conservative financial policies. Alongside the outlook change, the agency upgraded the retailer's speculative-grade liquidity rating to SGL-1, its highest level, pointing to a strong financial position supported by a $1.2 billion asset-based revolving credit facility.
The positive outlook reflects the credit agency's view that BJ's resilient business model, which relies on membership fees and essential grocery sales, will continue to support steady earnings and debt reduction.
Balance Sheet Strength
Disciplined debt management has significantly improved the company's financial metrics. For the 12 months ending August 1, 2026, BJ's generated approximately $23 billion in revenue, according to Moody's.
AdThis strong performance has allowed the Marlborough, Massachusetts-based company to lower its key leverage ratios. Moody's noted that BJ's adjusted debt-to-EBITDA leverage has fallen to 1.8x, while its EBIT-to-interest coverage has risen to 4.9x. The agency also cited BJ's strategic investments in digital capabilities and private-label expansion as key drivers of its value proposition.
Path to Investment Grade
A formal upgrade to an investment-grade rating is contingent on BJ's maintaining its financial discipline. Moody's stated that a future upgrade would depend on the company's ability to:
- Sustain debt-to-EBITDA leverage below 3.0x.
- Keep EBIT-to-interest coverage near 4.0x.
- Successfully transition toward an unsecured capital structure.
