Bitcoin Rallies Past $84,000, Faces Key Technical Resistance

Summary
Bitcoin surged more than 5% to trade above $84,500, but the cryptocurrency now faces a critical resistance zone around $85,500. Technical indicators suggest the short-term rally is overextended, signaling the potential for a pullback.
Bitcoin surged past the $84,000 mark on Tuesday, extending a powerful rally that has pushed the leading cryptocurrency up more than 5%. However, the advance is now testing a key technical resistance zone as short-term momentum indicators suggest the market may be overheated.
As of 6:20 AM EDT on Sep. 21, Bitcoin (BTC/USD) was trading at $84,549, a gain of 5.28% on the day, according to data from Investing.com. The move marks a significant bullish breakout, but analysts are closely watching whether the cryptocurrency can convert its former ceiling into a new floor.
Bullish Breakout Faces Immediate Test
The immediate challenge for bulls is to overcome the resistance area identified between $85,162 and $85,511. A sustained move above this zone is seen as critical for confirming the breakout's strength. On the downside, holding above the immediate 1-hour pivot point of $84,376 is the first step in maintaining the current upward trajectory.
Failure to clear the $85,500 level could trigger a quick pullback, as overbought markets often retrace before continuing their primary trend. The first significant support cluster is located between $83,678 and $83,735; a drop below this area would be the first technical sign of cooling momentum.
Key Levels to Watch
AdTechnical analysis highlights several price levels that could dictate Bitcoin's next move:
- Upside Targets: A decisive break above the immediate resistance would open the path toward the next major weekly resistance at $86,243. If bullish momentum persists, the next significant upside target is located at $90,582.
- Downside Protection: Should a pullback occur, a deeper retracement could find stronger support near $80,400. According to the technical report, a daily close below this level would significantly weaken the current breakout narrative.
Momentum Indicators Signal Caution
While the price action is strongly bullish, several momentum indicators are signaling caution for short-term traders. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) has hit 70.94, a level widely considered the border of "overbought" territory. The 1-hour RSI is even more extended at 82.19.
These readings suggest the recent price surge has been rapid and that the market could be due for a period of consolidation. However, the Average Directional Index (ADX) indicates the underlying trend is still strengthening, which could mean any dip might be viewed by some market participants as a buying opportunity.
