Bitcoin Holds Near $84,000 as Record ETF Inflows Battle Surging Bond Yields

Summary

The leading cryptocurrency is caught in a tug-of-war, with strong institutional demand via spot ETFs providing support against headwinds from U.S. Treasury yields reaching their highest levels since 2007.

Background

Bitcoin stabilized near the $84,000 mark heading into the weekend, as a powerful wave of institutional investment into spot ETFs helped offset significant pressure from rising U.S. government bond yields. The market dynamics highlight a classic battle between strong adoption metrics and a challenging macroeconomic environment for risk assets.

A Market Divided

As of 12:55 AM ET, Bitcoin was trading at $83,981.2, down approximately 0.27% for the day, according to Investing.com data. The price action followed a volatile week where the cryptocurrency briefly dipped below $83,000 before touching the $85,000 level on Friday.

The primary headwind comes from the bond market, where the 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield climbed above 5.2%, its highest level since 2007. Higher yields on government bonds increase the appeal of safer, interest-bearing assets, often drawing capital away from non-yielding, higher-risk assets like Bitcoin.

Countering this pressure is a surge in institutional demand. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded five consecutive days of net inflows totaling approximately $2.65 billion as of Wednesday. BlackRock's IBIT and Fidelity's FBTC were the primary drivers of Wednesday's $347 million in total inflows.

Corporate Adoption and Regulatory Headwinds

On the corporate front, MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:MSTR), the largest public holder of Bitcoin, announced a proposal to enhance its Bitcoin acquisition strategy. The company plans to introduce daily dividend accruals for four series of its preferred stock to boost their liquidity and demand, thereby creating a more robust capital source for future Bitcoin purchases.

The regulatory environment, however, presents a mixed and uncertain picture. In the U.S., the upcoming departure of pro-crypto SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce on October 2, coupled with the Senate's failure to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, has added to regulatory ambiguity.

Internationally, a proposed tax reform in Germany has raised concerns. The plan could subject crypto sales to a 50% tax on proceeds if the original purchase cost cannot be reliably documented, a move criticized by industry executives.

Altcoin Market Shows Modest Gains

The broader cryptocurrency market saw slight gains as the weekend approached. Major altcoins posted modest increases, with Ethereum (ETH) up 0.35% to $2,689.67 and Solana (SOL) rising 3.64% to $120.67, according to the source data.
