Bitcoin Holds Above $86,000 as MicroStrategy Resumes Purchases

Summary

The leading cryptocurrency maintained its recent gains, bolstered by a new $75.7 million Bitcoin acquisition by MicroStrategy and positive regulatory developments for tokenized securities.

Background

Bitcoin traded higher on Tuesday, extending a recent rally after corporate holder MicroStrategy disclosed it had once again increased its holdings of the cryptocurrency. The move comes amid a broader risk-on sentiment in digital asset markets, fueled by regulatory progress and a pullback in oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields.

As of 11:25 AM ET, Bitcoin was up 0.5% to $86,337.6, trading near an eight-month high reached on Monday, according to Investing.com data.

MicroStrategy Adds to Bitcoin Holdings

Software intelligence firm MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) disclosed in a Monday filing that it purchased an additional 950 bitcoins for $75.7 million between September 14 and September 20. The acquisition brings the company's total holdings to 846,000 BTC, its highest level since late June.

The purchase signals renewed confidence in the company's bitcoin treasury strategy, particularly after it had sold some of its holdings earlier in the year. MicroStrategy also revealed it repurchased 1.77 million of its preferred shares for $174 million during the same period to reduce its dividend payment obligations.

Market Sentiment and Price Action

The broader crypto market has been buoyed by several factors over the past week. While the failure of the key U.S. regulatory bill, known as the Clarity Act, was a disappointment, the market's negative reaction was tempered by the subsequent release of separate crypto regulatory frameworks by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

In a separate development, Bloomberg reported on Monday that U.S. federal prosecutors are investigating crypto exchange Binance for potential violations of sanctions against Iran. The news follows a previous $4.3 billion settlement Binance paid for violating U.S. anti-money laundering regulations. The exchange's native token, BNB, rose just 1.8% on Tuesday, lagging the wider market.

Altcoins Lifted by SEC Exemption

Alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, also saw gains, largely driven by an SEC announcement last week. The regulator granted a five-year exemption allowing qualified platforms to trade tokenized versions of U.S. stocks on blockchain-based systems.

This decision has sparked optimism for deeper integration between blockchain technology and traditional financial markets. Altcoins have particularly benefited, as most tokenization activity is expected to occur on networks like Ethereum rather than the Bitcoin blockchain.

  • Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, was flat at $2,745.53.
  • XRP gained 5.6% to trade at $1.5811.
  • Cardano (ADA) rose 3.5%, while Solana (SOL) saw a minor dip of 0.5%.
