Anthropic IPO to Test Investor Appetite for AI Growth-Over-Profit Story, Analyst Says

Anthropic's planned initial public offering will serve as a crucial test of investor patience for artificial intelligence companies that are prioritizing rapid growth over profitability, according to an analyst at Firstrade. The high-profile debut is expected to force a market-wide evaluation of AI sector valuations and spending intensity.
A Test for AI Valuations
The listing represents a significant moment for the AI industry, compelling investors to make decisions on capital allocation within the sector, said Stephen Callahan, a trading behavior analyst at Firstrade, in comments to Investing.com. The IPO will bring intense public scrutiny to the company's financials, which reportedly show a significant gap between its revenue and its bottom line.
According to the report, Anthropic generated $16.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2026 while recording a net loss of $80.7 billion. “Growth this fast will get rewarded, but I’d call it a test of how much patience the market has for AI growth stories, rather than a clear turning point,” Callahan stated.
Broader Market Implications
AdThe IPO's performance is also expected to be a bellwether for the major cloud computing platforms, or "hyperscalers." Callahan noted that nearly half of Anthropic's first-half revenue was generated through the marketplaces of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. This close relationship means the listing's reception will also reflect on these key technology partners.
IPO Volatility Risks
Callahan also issued a warning to retail investors, cautioning that large-scale IPOs can create a strong "fear of missing out" (FOMO) that encourages emotional trading. He noted that these investors often chase the stock at the market open, which is typically its most volatile period.
Volatility on the first day could be amplified by an unusual provision. “Day one has potential extra volatility here because insiders will be allowed to trade as soon as the first trading day, which could add to early price swings,” Callahan added.
