Akamai Stock Surges on Landmark $11.6 Billion AI Cloud Deal With Anthropic

Summary
Shares of Akamai Technologies surged over 15% in after-hours trading after the company announced a seven-year, $11.6 billion cloud services contract with AI firm Anthropic, signaling a major strategic expansion into AI infrastructure.
Akamai Technologies (NASDAQ: AKAM) stock surged 15.8% in after-hours trading after the cloud and content delivery company announced a massive, seven-year cloud services contract with artificial intelligence leader Anthropic valued at $11.6 billion.
Deal Details
The agreement, one of the largest ever disclosed in the AI infrastructure space, will see Akamai's distributed cloud platform support Anthropic's growing CPU workload requirements. The contract includes provisions for a potential expansion of up to an additional $9 billion, which would bring the total commitment to approximately $20 billion.
"Anthropic is advancing the AI revolution and we are thrilled they chose Akamai’s capabilities for building and operating AI infrastructure at scale," stated Akamai CEO Dr. Tom Leighton in the announcement. To deepen the strategic partnership, Akamai has also issued Anthropic a warrant for up to approximately 5% of its outstanding common stock.
Strategic Expansion and Supply Chain
This contract significantly repositions Akamai from a mature content delivery network into a formidable player in the high-growth AI infrastructure market. The deal builds on more than $2.8 billion in multi-year cloud commitments Akamai had secured earlier in 2026, according to the source material.
AdIn preparation for the new capacity demands, Akamai disclosed it has already signed a hardware agreement with Lenovo and issued a $1.7 billion build request to manufacturer Jabil for memory components. These moves indicate the company is rapidly scaling its physical infrastructure to service the Anthropic contract.
Market Reaction
Akamai's significant after-hours jump stood in sharp contrast to a challenging regular trading session for the broader market. Major U.S. indexes finished lower, with the S&P 500 falling 0.2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 0.1% amid concerns over rising Treasury yields.
The powerful, company-specific catalyst allowed Akamai shares to defy the negative macroeconomic sentiment, as investors moved quickly to price in the company's enhanced growth profile and strategic pivot to AI.
