Adtran Shares Plunge 14% After Slashing Q2 Revenue and Margin Forecast

Summary
Adtran Holdings cut its second-quarter financial outlook, citing a significant customer project delay and rising costs, which sent its stock tumbling in Wednesday trading.
Shares of Adtran Holdings (NASDAQ:ADTN) plummeted 14% on Wednesday after the telecommunications equipment provider announced a downward revision to its preliminary second-quarter 2026 revenue and margin guidance. The company attributed the shortfall to a project delay from a single customer and persistent cost pressures.
Revised Q2 Outlook
Adtran released preliminary, unaudited results that fell short of its previous forecasts and analyst expectations. The company now anticipates Q2 revenue to be between $280.0 million and $282.0 million, below its prior guidance of $283.0 million to $303.0 million. The new range also misses the consensus analyst estimate of $293.4 million.
Profitability metrics saw a more significant cut. The company's preliminary non-GAAP operating margin is now projected to be between 3.5% and 4.0%, a sharp drop from the previously guided range of 5.0% to 9.0%. On a GAAP basis, Adtran expects an operating loss margin between -3.2% and -4.0%.
Key preliminary Q2 figures include:
- Non-GAAP EPS: Expected between $0.03 and $0.05.
- GAAP Loss Per Share: Expected between $(0.12) and $(0.14).
Management Commentary and Forward Guidance
AdTom Stanton, Adtran's Chairman and CEO, directly addressed the headwinds in the announcement. "Our preliminary second quarter results were directly impacted by a project delay from a single customer. In addition, margins reflected the current elevated component and freight cost environment," Stanton said.
The challenges are expected to continue into the next quarter. For the third quarter of 2026, Adtran projects revenue in the range of $275.0 million to $295.0 million, with a non-GAAP operating margin forecast between 1.5% and 5.5%, indicating further potential pressure on profitability.
Context for Investors
The guidance cut highlights both customer concentration risk and broader macroeconomic pressures affecting the hardware sector. The reliance on a single customer project for a meaningful portion of revenue creates vulnerability, while elevated costs continue to squeeze margins for equipment manufacturers.
Adtran noted that these figures are preliminary and subject to the completion of its standard financial closing procedures. The company plans to release its final, audited second-quarter results after the market closes on August 3, 2026, followed by an investor call on August 4, 2026.
