Lot Size

Quick answer

A lot is the standard unit of measurement for a trade in forex. A standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency; mini and micro lots are 10,000 and 1,000 units respectively.

Lot sizes standardise trade quantities so that brokers and exchanges can quote prices consistently. In forex, the three most common sizes are: standard lot (100,000 units), mini lot (10,000 units), and micro lot (1,000 units). Some brokers also support nano lots (100 units).

Choosing the right lot size is fundamental to position sizing. Trading too large a lot relative to your account balance magnifies losses; too small and gains are insignificant. The correct size depends on your account equity, the stop-loss distance, and your risk tolerance per trade.

Lot size directly affects pip value. For a standard lot of EUR/USD, each pip movement is worth approximately $10. For a micro lot, it is $0.10. Understanding this relationship allows traders to calculate their maximum loss before entering a trade.

Many retail forex brokers now offer fractional lot sizes, allowing traders with smaller accounts to participate with precise position sizing rather than rounding to the nearest whole lot.
